The good news is that it's close: depending on traffic and how you travel, you'll arrive in 45 to 60 minutes. The archaeological zone sits in the State of Mexico, northeast of the capital, roughly 50 kilometers from the historic center. Option 1: By car (the most flexible)
Driving your own or a rented car is the most comfortable and fastest way to go, especially if you're planning an early start for a balloon flight. From the city center you take the Mexico–Pachuca (Mexico 85D) highway and then the Mexico–Tulancingo / Ecatepec–Pirámides (50D), which drops you practically at the gates of the archaeological zone. The drive is about 50 km and takes 45 to 60 minutes with light traffic; if you leave during rush hour from the south of the city, allow more time.
- Tolls: you'll pass two toll booths along the way (roughly $90–$110 MXN total, depending on your starting point).
- Parking: the archaeological zone has several gates (Gates 1, 2 and 3 are the most used) with paid parking. If you head to the We Fly balloon port, parking is free.
- Tip: use Waze or Google Maps and leave early. For a balloon flight you need to be on site by about 5:30 a.m., so departing Mexico City around 4:00–4:30 a.m. gives you plenty of margin.
Option 2: By bus from Terminal del Norte
This is the cheapest alternative and, surprisingly, one of the most practical. Direct buses to Teotihuacan leave from the Terminal Central de Autobuses del Norte (Terminal del Norte), on Av. de los Cien Metros, next to the Autobuses del Norte station on Metro Line 5.
- Company: look for the Autobuses Teotihuacán ticket window (usually in Sala 8). Ask for a ticket to "the Pyramids" or "zona arqueológica," not to the town of San Juan Teotihuacán, so you're dropped right at the site gates.
- Cost: around $120–$130 MXN each way.
- Frequency and duration: departures every 15–30 minutes; the ride takes about 1 hour.
- Tip: tell the driver you're getting off at the Pyramids. The first bus leaves early, but public transport doesn't run early enough for a sunrise balloon flight — so book the tour's transport or drive instead.
Option 3: By Uber, DiDi, or app taxi
If you value door-to-door convenience without driving, a ride-hailing app is excellent. You request the trip from your hotel and it drops you straight at the entrance of the archaeological zone or at the balloon port.
- Cost: between $450 and $750 MXN one way, depending on the part of the city, the time, and demand.
- Time: the same as by car, 45 to 60 minutes.
- Watch the return trip: in Teotihuacan there are sometimes few drivers available to get back. Arrange for your driver to wait, or combine with the tour's transport so you're not stranded.

- Leave early. Both to beat the traffic heading out of the city and to enjoy the soft morning light over the pyramids.
- Bring cash. For tolls, site admission, parking, and tips; not every spot accepts cards.
- Protect yourself from the sun. Cap, sunscreen, sunglasses, and water: the valley is sunny and hot by mid-morning.
- For a balloon flight, don't wing the transport. Sunrise timing doesn't fit the public bus schedule; drive or add the tour's transport.
